Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between surface-mounted and suspended LED fixtures?

Surface-mounted fixtures attach directly to the ceiling or wall and are ideal for low ceilings, utility areas, corridors, and spaces where you cannot recess a fixture. Suspended fixtures hang from cables or rods and are used in offices, retail stores, showrooms, open-ceiling environments, and industrial spaces where a more architectural look is desired.

When should I choose suspended fixtures instead of surface-mounted?

Choose suspended lighting when you have:

  • Higher ceilings
  • Open-ceiling layouts
  • Offices or retail environments that need a clean, modern look
  • The need to bring light closer to a working surface Suspended fixtures also allow for continuous runs and more creative layouts.

Are surface and suspended LED lights easy to install?

Yes. Both styles are designed for simple installation.

  • Surface-mounted fixtures typically install to a junction box or directly to the ceiling surface.
  • Suspended fixtures include adjustable cables or rods, making leveling simple.

Many retrofit projects install these without altering the ceiling structure.

Do these fixtures support dimming and control systems?

Most surface and suspended LED lights are compatible with:

  • 0–10V dimming
  • Occupancy sensors
  • Daylight harvesting sensors
  • Wireless control systems
  • Building automation platforms

This provides flexibility for offices, schools, conference rooms, and open workspaces.

What types of spaces commonly use surface or suspended LED lights?

You’ll see these fixtures in:

  • Offices and conference rooms
  • Retail stores and showrooms
  • Hallways and corridors
  • Classrooms and libraries
  • Open-ceiling commercial spaces
  • Industrial areas that require architectural lighting

They’re popular because of their even light distribution and modern appearance.

How long do surface and suspended LED fixtures last, and what maintenance is needed?

Most fixtures last 50,000 to 100,000 hours, depending on the model. Because they are integrated LED systems, there are no bulbs or ballasts to replace. Routine cleaning of the lens and occasional inspection of mounting hardware is usually all that’s required.
