Hisco Case Study
Hisco, a specialty distribution company serving many markets, upgrades their Houston location with the help of National LED to improve operations and better serve their customers.
Since being founded in the 1940s, Hisco has grown into a national leader in supply chain solutions serving major industrial markets. By conducting business through customer-focused initiatives, they’ve grown internationally to include over 30 stocking locations across the United States, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Canada. Their corporate mission is to be a trusted solutions provider through investment, innovation, and operational excellence.
So it’s no surprise that when their Lean Solutions Team was working on ways to implement improvements to better serve their customers, they concluded that new lighting would be major component for operation efficiency. Over the course of time, the existing fluorescent lighting in the offices and the metal halide fixtures in the warehouse had suffered from degraded performance or had completely malfunctioned. For a company that prides itself on inventory management, poor or non-existent lighting in the warehouse led to substandard productivity and unpredictable maintenance that would stop business activities. Starting with the Houston location, Hisco turned to National LED to retrofit the legacy lighting system to energy-efficient LED technology. What were their primary goals? Drastically improve the lighting quality, eliminate maintenance, and reduce annual energy consumption.
The lighting experts at National LED worked closely with US LED to develop a turnkey solution that could be deployed in less than 30 days without interrupting operations. Across the entire project, National LED retrofit 357 fluorescent 2×4 fixtures (120W each), with US LED’s TDK troffer retrofit kit. At only 30W each, the TDK easily and efficiently converts existing fluorescent troffers to LED technology without disturbing the plenum space. By also installing Leviton® smart dimming solutions throughout the offices, employees would have complete control of the environment to adjust the lighting based on their needs. For the warehouse, the existing metal halide fixtures were replaced with only 28 ExsaBay®XLE LED high bay luminaires. The ExsaBay®XLE from US LED is a scalable, high bay lighting solution that is designed for large mounting heights and offers multiple optical distributions for specific areas like aisles in-between racking. With better efficacy and more footcandles on the ground, employees can see their tasks in greater detail while the company saves energy.
Just finished getting our new LED lighting installed in our building, a very large project that included stairways. Everyone in the entire building is very pleased with the lighting, with the people that installed the lighting, with the project management, and the communication. Special thanks to them for putting all this together and staying on top of everything. This is a first class company and we are all very pleased.
Nelson Picard | Vice President of Operations | Hisco
The new LED lighting has been a glowing success by providing an enhanced workspace for employees and has contributed to the corporate sustainability effort. The organization has benefited from increased productivity from employees who are more efficient with their tasks and will see a significant impact on energy conservation, with more than 314,000 kWh reduced annually (74% lower). With integrated intelligent lighting controls, they can further capitalize on improved performance and energy savings in the future. Not only are these ultra-longlife lighting solutions energy-efficient, they also will help eliminate maintenance issues long term. Now they can have employees focused on servicing their customers instead of their own lighting. Knowing that their new LED lighting is also backed by a 10-year warranty, Hisco will enjoy trouble-free lighting for years to come and is positioned to better serve the needs of their customers.
